Anastasios G. Leventis’ vision was to establish a fine arts museum in his homeland, Cyprus, allowing his compatriots to enjoy the art he loved: the works and objects he collected throughout his lifetime. A Trust established by him included in its objects, provision of the necessary funds for the creation of the Gallery and for the covering of its running and operational costs.
A. G. Leventis Gallery aim is to provide Cyprus with a cultural institution that will promote European art, bringing the public in contact, for the first time, with major works created within the span of four centuries, from the Renaissance to the 20th century. The Gallery’s highlights span all three of its collections, of European, Greek and Cypriot art respectively - and include numerous works by celebrated artists such as El Greco, Canaletto, Boucher, Renoir, Monet, Chagall, Volanakis, Rallis, Moralis, Parthenis, Diamantis and Kissonergis. The works reflect Anastasios G. Leventis’ personal aesthetic.

Established in May 1979, Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation, focuses on society, education and culture. For 40 years, the Foundation has supported the dissemination of Greek and Cypriot cultural heritage, as well as extensive public benefits programs, pioneering environmental protection projects and medical research. The Foundation also concentrates on the systematic granting of scholarships, on philanthropy and sustainable development projects in Southern Europe, Africa and world-wide.

The opening of the gallery has offered an important cultural outlet and a source of optimism for the future. In addition, the state of the art technology available for the needs of the newly built gallery, was an excellent opportunity to showcase a lot more data and information to the public while saving space at the same time.
