In 1975, an awe-inspiring piece of art was presented to the public for the first time: The World of Cyprus. A large-scale composition (17,5 meters long and 1,75 meters high) created by Adamantios Diamantis, portraying the people and landscapes of Cyprus, capturing the traditional world and spirit of the island. The composition was in Greece since 1976 and in 2013, it was finally returned to Cyprus thanks to the efforts of The A. G. Leventis Foundation. After its return, this grandiose piece of art was originally exhibited to the public at The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia. Since March 2014, it is included in the permanent Cyprus Collection of The Leventis Gallery. Read more...
Back in the 1980's, it was time for Nicosia to acquire a historical museum. Mr Lellos Demetriades, who was then the mayor of Nicosia, had the vision to establish a historical museum that would tell the story of Nicosia, the only city in Cyprus which is inhabited since 3900 B.C., and the last divided capital city of Europe . A ruined family mansion, which was about to be demolished, seemed to be the ideal place to host this new museum. It was a historical mansion, owned by Themistoclis Dervis, a notable figure of the city, who served as a mayor for 28 whole years. The reconstruction of this building into a new museum would contribute to the revitalization of the historical center of the old town. Always interested in the dissemination of the cultural heritage of Cyprus, the A. G. Leventis Foundation reached to an agreement with Nicosia Municipality and purchased the building to reconstruct it into the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia. In April 1989, the historical museum of the city opened its gates to the public.
Two years later, in 1991, The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia was honored with the European Museum of the Year Award, by the Committee of the European Museum of the Year Award, under the auspices of the Council of Europe. This significant distinction which placed the museum on the map of the most notable museums in Europe, was awarded because for the first time, Cyprus had acquired a modern museum telling the history of Nicosia in an objective and balanced way. Throughout the years, The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, which started out without a single item to exhibit, had managed to turn into a true jewel of the city, housing rich and unique collections of items from the very birth of Nicosia to its most modern historical moments. More than 25 years later, the museum continues to contribute significantly to the protection and promotion of the history and culture of Nicosia, as well as the history of the whole island.
OPPORTUNITY: To communicate this exhibition to the public as a source of inspiration in their struggle against the financial crisis that hit the island. In a spirit of optimism, the World of Cyprus has returned to its roots, urging Cypriots to go back to their roots, reflect on the wisdom hidden in their country's traditional values and stand on their own feet once more.
